Officers Involved In Sunday Shooting Identified

The two officers involved in Sunday’s shooting of an armed carjacking suspect were identified as Michael Swan and Jennifer Amezquita.

The Killeen Police Department was dispatched to the 3300 block of Veterans Memorial Boulevard at about 2:30 p.m. Sunday to respond to a call about a carjacking. KPD received another call from a different location, the AutoZone, on Veterans Memorial Boulevard at 2:45 about a man with a gun. The caller told the dispatcher a man with a gun had come to the store and was acting erratic. The caller described the vehicle that the suspect was driving, a white sedan. The description matched the description of the car taken during the carjacking 15 minutes earlier. Upon arrival at the auto parts store, officers observed the suspect waving and pointing a weapon. The suspect fled on foot and tried to take another vehicle. The occupants of that vehicle refused to get out, and the suspect resumed on foot. Officers flooded the downtown area attempting to locate the suspect. When officers arrived near Santa Fe and 10th Street, the suspect entered an unlocked, unoccupied police vehicle with a key in the ignition. Officers warned the suspect several times that they would shoot if he attempted to move the police vehicle. Moments later, officers, later identified as Michael Swan and Jennifer Amezquita, fired at the car, and glass shattered. The patrol vehicle traveled nearly 100 feet along the railroad tracks, where it stopped. The suspect was apprehended and airlifted to a nearby hospital.

The suspect has not been charged and remains hospitalized. The Killeen Police Department and Texas Rangers are still investigating the incident. Michael Swan is a 16-year-veteran, and Jennifer Amezquita is a four-year veteran.
